The iPhone 5S rumor roundup

iPhone 5S: Will it look the same as the iPhone 5?

(Credit: Sarah Tew/CNET)
iPhone rumors are like flies at a summer picnic: they're nearly unstoppable. Collected in one batch are all the iPhone 5S/6 rumors CNET has reported so far, with some commentary on where these rumors came from.
We always have long wish lists for newer features and further redesigns, but the bottom line is this: nobody knows exactly what we'll get until Tim Cook reveals it on stage later this year.
That said, we've got plenty of educated guesses. With that caveat firmly in place:
Likely:
Odds are strong that the immediate successor to the iPhone 5 will debut in the summer to autumn time frame (June to October). The release will all but certainly coincide with the availability of iOS 7. Moreover, if it follows Apple's previous history, the new iPhone will have the same design but with tweaked innards, in the spirit of the iPhone 4S and 3GS.
Beyond those obvious notes, the areas that seem most ripe for updating on the "iPhone 5S" would be the resolution of the cameras. And now that there's a 128GB iPad, maybe there will finally be a 128GB iPhone option, too.

Unknown:
Everything else is pretty much a crapshoot. A bigger screen? CEO Tim Cook says no -- but saying one thing and doing the opposite would hardly be a first for Apple. Beyond a screen size change, though, Apple could also go with a different technology -- say, Igzo or OLED.
There are plenty of other unknowns, too. Will there be another iPhone that debuts before a fall model? Could the iPhone product line split into several differently sized models? Will an affordable "new" budget-line iPhone emerge? Will Apple finally add NFC to the iPhone, as part of a new mobile payments scheme? Anything could happen. Or not.
As more rumors emerge, they'll be added here.
The rumors thus far:

Low-cost iPhone will be like a plastic iPhone 5, claims site
The much-rumored budget iPhone will borrow many elements from the current model but use a plastic design, says iLounge. The site claims the budget phone will be something like a fusion of the iPhone 5 and fifth-gen iPod Touch.

Images of alleged next-gen iPhone components surface
A French blog posts images of what it says are speaker components for the next round of Apple smartphones, what it calls an iPhone 5S and iPhone 6. Blurry, close-up shots of speaker components don't tell much of a story, though.

Renderings tease what a 4.8-inch iPhone would look like
Continuing along the rumor that Apple is preparing an even larger-screened iPhone for 2014 (see below), Russian Apple news site Apple Digger created renderings of what such a device would look like. This is speculation on top of rumor.

Bigger iPhone still coming -- just not this year, report says
If you're holding out for a 5-inch iPhone, you might have to wait until 2014, a new report from DigiTimes (which must be taken with a whole shaker of salt) claims.

Rumor: 4.8-inch iPhone to debut in June
A Google translation from the Chinese language Commercial Times points to a larger-screened iPhone in time for the Worldewide Developers Conference. While it's a sketchy rumor, it seems reasonable that Apple will get serious about taking on smartphones like Samsung's 4.8-inch Galaxy S3.

Apple to stop Mac Pro sales in much of Europe on March 1

Apple today told retailers and distributors in most European countries that it will stop selling the Mac Pro on March 1 because the desktop system doesn't meet electrical regulations.
The Mac Pro's ports and fans don't comply with a new amendment -- which goes into effect at the beginning of March -- addressing safety and electrical standards for electronics, according to Macworld. An Apple spokesman confirmed the decision to CNET. The regulation affects the 27 countries of the European Union, which includes the U.K., Germany and France, and the four countries in the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) -- Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Although Apple itself will stop its sales of the Mac Pro, Apple resellers will be able to sell any remaining inventory after March 1.

Apple releases new iPad with 128 GB of storage

Apple added a new member to its iPad line on Tuesday, offering a 9.7-inch Retina iPad with 128 gigabytes of storage -- doubling the tablet's previous max capacity.

Everything else about Apple's tablet is the same, including the dual-core A6X processor, 2 gigabtyes of RAM, and 10 hours of battery life.
To account for the added storage space, the 128 GB Wi-Fi model will now cost $799, while the LTE model will cost $929.
To offer some differentiation from its other iPads -- which start at $329 for the iPad mini -- Apple is targeting the new model primarily at professional users, including those in the architectural and medical fields who handle large files. Gamers, movie fans and avid magazine readers are also likely to appreciate the extra storage space.
The abrupt release marks a shift in how Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) is updating the iPad. Instead of rolling out new iPads once a year or so, as it does with iPhones and iPods, Apple is now treating the iPad more like its Mac line, releasing incremental updates to existing models. (Tech blogs began publishing leaked reports about the new iPad two days ago.)
In late 2012, Apple released a fourth-gen iPad with new processor a mere six months after the release of the third-generation Retina iPad. Much like in this most recent update, all other specs remained the same.
Apple has not explicitly announced this strategy shift, so it's an open question whether or not we'll see a more significant iPad update this year.

their last quarter, although Verizon have just announced their latest quarter results and in the results was the news that they sold 6.2 million iPhones in quarter 4 of 2012.

iPad 5 Design Leaked by Foxconn Staffer – Report

Apple’s next major iPad upgrade will adopt design elements akin to the diminutive iPad mini released in October 2012, according to
a Chinese source citing a Foxconn employee.

Customers have responded extremely well to the diminutive tablet computer, and Apple now seems poised to implement some of its benefits on the larger iPads.

The fifth-generation iPad has already been rumored to adopt a thinner bezel and sloping edges much like the smaller iPad mini.

An insider from Hon Hai Precision Industry (which owns Foxconn) is now spilling the beans on Apple’s chosen design for the iPad 5, as the media refers to it.

Originally quoted by My Drivers (a Chinese IT site), this Hon Hai insider is reportedly a Foxconn employee. Foxconn assembles most of Apple’s portable gadgets, including the iPhone and the iPad.

Patently Apple cites the source as saying that “the iPad 5 is to sport a new design that will adopt narrow bezels and chamfered edge corners. The end result will have the new iPad 5, code named ‘sapoxx,’ look more like a magnified iPad mini.”

If the rumors are true, Apple could have the fifth-generation iPad ready for us this spring.

The Cupertino mammoth seems to have accelerated the refresh cycle of its tablet computers, likely in response to demand, as well as the competition.

The same thing is reportedly about to happen on the smartphone front. Up until this week, Apple was rumored to plan the launch of two new iPhone models. Many analysts believe one of them will be a low-end phone that everyone can afford.

On Monday, however, reports started to emerge that Apple was actually planning to launch three new iPhones in 2013, one of which is dubbed “Math.”

Like others, we believe there’a a good chance the rumor is fabricated, and that includes the name of the alleged 4.8-inch handset – “iPhone Math.” Videos of ipad 5

China Market and Mini Tablets are Expected to Breaks the PC Mold

front
A new study claiming that tablet shipments are to overtake notebook shipments globally for the first time this year, thanks to China market and smaller tablet. The report explains that tablet shipments will reach more than 240 million units worldwide this year, with notebooks forecast to reach 207 million units. The report also states that smaller 7 to 8-inch tablets will grow to account for 45 percent of the tablet market in 2013, with 9.7-inch devices like the iPad dropping to a share of 17 percent. Tablets also appear to be currying favor in emerging countries across the world, with fast-growing global power China set to become the second largest tablet market in 2013 …
According to the electronic product research firm DisplaySearch, Tablet computer sales will reach 240 million devices, overwhelming sales of laptops this year while Apple is expected to maintain market dominance with projected 64 percent growth. The sales of China-made tablet computers are also expected to reach to 60 million devices, accounting for 27 percent of the country’s tablet market. Smaller display sizes on the newest generations of tablet computers will be more popular than the original 10-inch displays. Tablets with phone capabilities will be the potential trend for the next wave. Around 10 percent of tablet computers are expected to be equipped with phone functionality by the end of the year.
in001
iPad is expected to maintain the tablet market dominance.
Smaller Android-based tablets are getting popular.
Tablets have screen sizes ranging from 7 inches to 10 inches, while notebook computers range from 10 inches to 17 inches. Tablets are focused on convenience, while notebooks are built for performance. But that growth rate for laptops will slow as consumer tastes shift from performance to convenience. Tablets are more responsive and accessible, easy to carry, and more intuitive to use. The mix of tablet sales may change. With the Jelly Bean 4.1 version of the Android operating system, Google finally has an excellent software that could jumpstart the tablet market beyond the iPad.
Apple’s 9.7-inch tablets have ruled to date. But we expects the emergence of new screen sizes at 7 inches or so, as reflected in devices such as the Google Nexus 7 and various type of China-made tablet which is Cheap and practical, will be getting more demand from consumer, especially in China. Apple iPad mini is already doing quite well in Chinese market. As a matter of fact, small tablet are expected to become our future personal computer.

Slimmer iPad 5 and New iPad Mini Coming Soon

You don’t think Apple is done building their Death Star, do you?
In another move sure to separate consumers from their cash, the iPad 5 will likely be ready for Christmas, 2013 at the latest. Expect it to share some touch screen technology from the iPad Mini to make it lighter and slimmer.
While the iPad Mini is selling well and it feels like the iPad 4 was released 10 minutes ago, it is likely that Apple will look to solidify their reign of the tablet market in the face of Microsoft’s Surface by pushing the iPad 5. Meanwhile, an iPhone 5S is probably in the works, if not a full-blown iPhone 6.

Slimmer iPad 5 and New iPad Mini Coming Soon

With a new year comes fresh reports of Apple's upcoming device releases, and the iPad is no exception. Initial leaks indicate the next generation iPad will have a slimmer width from side to side. This form factor would essentially mirror the iPad mini, except with a larger screen size. Gizmag explains that the bezel on each side will be over 8 mm thinner.
ipad 4 and ipad mini 2
Not only this, but the iPad 5 could launch as early as March 2013 thanks to new competition in the tablet market. The Next Web has already received evidence from developers that Apple is indeed testing new hardware. The company has also moved to source A7 processors from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) instead of Samsung.
Although Samsung currently manufactures 32nm A6X iPad chips, according to SlashGear Apple is already running a trial with TSMC to produce a 28nm A6X chip. If the trial is successful, Apple could move its production of the next generation A7 chip to TSMC. Samsung and Apple continue to have legal battles as Apple has slowly reduced dependence on its rival to supply components.
The March 2013 date may be early, as other reports have pointed to a summer 2013 release date for the refreshed iPad line. It's not clear whether or not Apple will continue to manufacture the original iPad mini or previous versions of the full-size iPad to sell at a reduced price after the iPad 5 launch. We can be sure as the tablet market continues to heat up that Apple will put everything it has into staying at the top of its game.
When it comes to the iPad mini 2, the updated hardware will likely include a 7.9-inch Retina display. Apple is expected to announce iPad mini sales of over 10 million units during the last quarter of 2012.
